Last year, LucasFilm searched for a woman to be Mara Jade. They found a Virginian women named Shannon Baksa. Many people liked her and just as many thought she didn't fit Mara at all. I started out not liking her, but now I'm kind of in the middle. She's okay, but I think there are definately better candidates. Go here to see some of the pictures of Shannon and judge for yourself, then come back and vote in Mara Poll 1.
They're now using Shannon for all pics of Mara, novel covers, comic covers, etc. I don't think Shannon is an actress though, so if they ever make a Star Wars movie featuring Mara, they'd have to find an actress to play her. But just who should, or could, play Mara??
I see there as being certain criteria an actress would have to meet to be a good Mara:
1. Mara is one tough cookie. An actress would not only have to be able to act tough convincingly but also have the look of years of pain and anger hidden behind a solid wall of steel. She's a warrior, independent, stubborn, forceful, determined, strong-willed, etc. Those are characteristics the actress would have to be able to act AND show on her face.
2. I read somewhere, can't for the life of me remember where, that while Mara worked for Emperor Palpatine, he would have her dress up for his parties and act as if she were a member of some royal or noble family in order to get information from other people there. It was also said that Mara's beauty made some suspect that she was one of Palpatine's mistresses. So any actress that played her would also have to have a lethal beauty and nobility about her.
3. An obvious requirement is the bright red-gold hair and bright green eyes. Of course, these days everyone's dying their hair and wearing color contacts, especially Hollywood, but if they choose someone who isn't a natural red-headed-green-eyed woman, the actress would have to have a face and skin tone that matched that coloring. Let's face it, some people just look terrible with red hair or green eyes (not that I would know...eh hem....^_^)
4. Not as necessary but important, someone who has good chemistry with Mark Hamill. If they don't look like they could ever be a couple, the whole thing wouldn't look right.
